A fire extinguishing unit (4), actuated with a drive system (5), is movable along a horizontal railing (3) at the inner surface of a tunnel lining (2). The drive unit consists of a propellant reservoir (7), a fire extinguishing agent reservoir (6), vertical pipes (8) connected to a horizontal line (9) and set with nozzles (10), a sensor (11), and couplings (13) connecting the line to the agent reservoir. A heat development sensor is set at a predetermined distance from the tunnel lining and the entire system.
