The vehicle has a generator driven by its engine, starter, energy storage device, on-board electrical system(s), battery, d.c. converter and isolating switch. The generator is directly connected to the storage device, the switch is opened at the start of recuperation and remains open until the storage device voltage decreases to about the electrical system voltage, and the converter and if necessary battery take over supply when the switch is open. The motor vehicle has a generator (1) driven by the vehicle's engine, a starter (2) (preferably a combined starter-generator), an energy storage device (6), at least one on-board electrical system (9), a battery (14), a d.c. converter (8) and a switch for isolating the electrical system from the generator. The generator is directly connected to the storage device, the switch is opened at the start of recuperation and remains open until the storage device voltage decreases to about the electrical system voltage, and the converter and if necessary the battery take over supply when the switch is open.
