Method uses several steps for recognition of car battery acid coating, i.e. determining first charge state value, in battery load phase, based on estimated rest voltage. Then second charge state value in battery rest phase, following battery load phase, based on measured rest voltage. First value is compared with second value and acid coating is recognized at exceeding defined deviation of first from second value. Preferably deviation is defined as more than 20 per cent. Independent claims are included for determining battery charge state, removing acid layers and use of above recognition method.
