A method and a system for controlling a internal combustion engine, wherein said motor is suitable, in a circuit which is under a plurality of operating modes selected operating mode to operate, presented be. One of these modes is characterized by layer drawer combustion, and the other of said modes is characterized by homogeneous combustion. The method and system, the determination of a preferred operating mode on the basis of engine operating conditions and of a requested torque; further comprises determining the basis of the requested torque, whether the operation of the above-mentioned preferred operating mode is feasible. The method and system cause a transition of the motor to the preferred operating mode, when the said preferred operating mode was determined as feasible, otherwise, the said motor in any one of the modes which a minimum difference between the in any one of the mentioned modes produced torque and the requested torque to be produced, operated. The determination of the feasibility comprises determining the maximum torque τmax, s, by the said motor in a stratified-charge mode can be delivered, and the determining the minimum torque τmin, h, by the said mode can be released in the homogeneous mode.
