A system includes a starter; an alternator; a flywheel; a retarder; a load bank heater (30) disposed in an exhaust piper; and an engine control module to receive a signal to initiate a regeneration cycle. The engine control activates the load bank heater that applies a load to the engine and adjusts engine-operating parameters when the vehicle (12) is at rest and the engine is idling. The starter, alternator, flywheel and retarder are combined as an integrated assembly.
