Cementation of steel components for hot working, by low pressure or vacuum carburation consists of: (a) fixing the required peripheral carbon content for the carburation temperature by thermodynamic simulation; (b) heating the components under a protective gas atmosphere or vacuum at a temperature in a range from 400 degrees C to the carburation temperature; (c) replacing the protective gas atmosphere or vacuum with a hydrogen atmosphere; (d) carburizing the components and regulating the fixed peripheral carbon by diffusion.
