The process involves regulating a free wheel function mode with an open clutch based on a driving situation or a functioning state of a power unit. Power unit output quantity is regulated based on a torque or speed of vehicle to a constant value. The quantity is regulated during transition between function mode with closed clutch towards the free wheel function mode by coordinating clutching and brake applying action. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a power unit of a vehicle.
