PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a uniform and high density tape-formed material containing a multiple-layered or single-layered high purity carbon nano tube, to easily form the multiple-layered or single-layered high purity carbon nano tube in an atmosphere without using a closed container, or the like, by using an arc-discharging method, to provide a high performance field emission type electrode of the high purity carbon nano tube by using the tape-formed material, and to enable to produce such the field emission type electrodes easily. PSOLUTION: The subject method for synthesizing the carbon nano tubes by performing the arc discharge comprises forming an arc discharge passage along with the flow of an inert gas or a mixed gas containing the inert gas supplied towards a cathode 2 consisting of a carbon material, and moving the relative positions of the both electrodes at the same time to move the cathode point of the arc 3 on the cathode material.
