PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner capable of implementing temporary read for obtaining a sharp image, the temporary read being improved in reliability and reducing costs. PSOLUTION: In the sensor, monochromatic original image data are generated in a temporary read step to test a read status therewith (S1, S2). In a main read step, color original image data are then generated. Therefore, time or power consumption relating to the temporary read step can be reduced just for monochromatic reading. Further, a resolution is not reduced even in the temporary read step, thereby obtaining a sharp image similar to that in the main read step. Moreover, the temporary read step and the main read step are performed by the same sensor part in this sensor, so that an image read status is not deviated between both the steps in comparison with configuration wherein both the steps are performed by two sensor parts. Therefore, reliability of the temporary read step can be improved. Besides, cost increase or entire size expansion caused by providing two sensor parts can be avoided. PCOPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
