PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method capable of accurately detecting a braking force in a brake device which performs braking through the pressing of brake shoes against the treads of the wheels of a rolling stock, etc. SOLUTION: A brake reaction detecting device, which detects a brake reaction in a brake device which performs braking by pressing a brake shoe 40A against the tread S of a wheel W, includes a tongue 71A, a groove 11A, and a linear bearing part 5A, which hold the whole or part of the brake device and permit only longitudinal movement in the braking direction, and a load cell 60A detecting the brake reaction. Therefore, the braking force can be accurately separated and detected irrespective of a force in the direction perpendicular to braking.
