PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase difference compensating film for improving a visual field angle dependence and contrast of a liquid crystal display device by having pieces of retardation Re and Rth sufficiently large in one piece.;SOLUTION: The phase difference compensating film is obtained to extend in the length direction a laterally extending film extending a long annular olefin based resin film in the widthwise direction. In the phase difference compensating film, an absolute value |nx-ny| of front birefringence of an annular olefin based resin film extended in the width direction is in a prescribed range, and the retardation Re in a face and the retardation Rth in the thickness direction satisfy a prescribed condition. Consequently, light making elliptical polarization by passing a liquid crystal cell can be optically compensated, and the liquid crystal display device largely improving the contrast and visual field angle can be obtained by using the phase difference compensating film.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
