PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for accurately deciding a cracked grain for continuously and rapidly deciding the cracked grains of a large quantity of grains and an apparatus for selecting the cracked grains by using the method. ;SOLUTION: The method for deciding cracked grain comprises the steps of emitting a light to conveyed grains to receive a transmitted light of the grain, and deciding presence or absence of a cracked grain from a change of an amount the received light. In this case, a light of a laser beam source 3 is emitted to the conveyed grains. Two types of the transmitted light waveforms are received by photosensors 4, 5 from two positions of a grain conveying direction. A difference of the two types of the waveforms is calculated, and then differentiated to obtain a processed waveform. Thus, a difference of high and low levels of the waveform is calculated.
