"HAND BRAKE FOR A DISK BRAKE SYSTEM AND A DISK BRAKE SYSTEM INCORPORATING THE SAME". A parking brake (14) is incorporated into a housing (10) of a disc brake system (12). The housing (10) is in the shape of an annular ring fitted with a plurality of cavities (16) to house service brake pistons acting on brake pads (18) to selectively force the brake pads (18) onto a disc. brake to produce a braking effect. The parking brake (14) includes a housing-supported actuator (23) that is capable of shifting from an applied state where it forces the brake pad (18) to contact the system brake disc (10) independent of the action of the service brake pistons, producing a braking effect on the parking brake to a rest state, where the driver (23) allows the brake pad (18) to disengage from the brake disc. The driver (23) includes a hydraulic parking brake piston (27) having a rod (24). The rod (24) is slidably retained within a hole (26) formed in the housing (10) and is arranged to actuate or otherwise apply force to the insert (18). When fluid pressure is applied to the hydraulic parking brake piston (27) it retracts the stem (24) into the housing (10) releasing the parking brake (14). In the absence of fluid pressure application, a spring (34) of the actuator (23) operates to shift the actuator (23) to an applied state where the rod (24) pushes on the insert (18) forcing contact with the disc. brake, providing the braking effect.
