This paper deals with the design and operational results of an ultrasonic inspection system specifically designed to detect, in a reliable and repetitive way, the cracks that may develop in train wheels around the brake disk mounting drills. The system, originally conceived by INTERLAB Ingenieria Electronica, has been certified by RENFE, the Spanish railroad services operator, as the approved standard for train wheel inspection.
