New DNA molecule (I) contains the control regions and the structural gene for a protein having formate dehydrogenase (FMDH) activity. Also new are recombinant vector contg. (I) and microorganisms contg. such vectors. (I) may encode wild-type or modified FMDH protein and can include (1) foreign genes under stringent control of the FMDH regulatory sequences and/or (2) a secretory signal. The specification includes the complete sequence of the FMDH gene and its 5' and 3' control regions (2276 bases) and of the protein encoded by its 1020 base open reading frame. Specified foreign genes are those of hepatitis B virus S1-S2-S or S antigens; alpha-amylase or glucoamylase from Schwanniomyces castelli (Sc.c.) or invertase of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S.c.). Secretion signals are e.g., Hansenula polymorpha membrane translocation signals; Sc.c. alpha-amylase or glucoamylase signals, or S.c. alpha-factor or invertase signals. Pref. microorganisms are yeasts of the genera Candia, Hansenula or Tichia; these may contain (I) as extra-chromosomal DNA or integrated into the genome.
