Treating a mammal with an APP processing disorder such as Alzheimer's Disease and Down's Syndrome by administering at least one HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor

Methods for the treatment and prevention of APP processing disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Down's Syndrome which are based on the administration of an effective amount of a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor to a mammal are disclosed. Additionally, methods for the treatment and prevention of APP processing disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Down's Syndrome which are based on the reduction of cellular cholesterol in a mammal are disclosed. These methods reduce the amount of Abeta peptides or decrease the formation of Abeta peptides or increase the clearance of Abeta peptides in a mammal suffering from Alzheimer's disease and Down's Syndrome.
