Casting roller comprises a metallic rolling body (2) having a metallic layer (4) which is harder than the material of the rolling body. The layer has a lower hardness in a region bordering the rolling body than in the region of its free surface. An Independent claim is also included for a process for producing the casting roller comprising electrolytically depositing a metallic layer on the rolling body using a deposition stream which increases from a lowest possible value during the course of the deposition process. Preferred Features: The layer in the region bordering the rolling body has a different composition than in the region of its free surface.
