Procedure to form groups of sheets from a plurality of sheets (A, A¿, B, B¿, C, C¿) with the following steps: (a) provide two sheets in each case; (b) in case the sheets provided in step (a) belong to the same group of sheets, - transport these sheets in a common way for the sheets and to a collection station (108); and (c) otherwise, - transport the sheet of a preceding group of sheets in a common path for the sheets and move it in the direction of a stop point (106), - with a temporary offset from the sheet of the preceding group , transport the other sheet of a subsequent group of sheets in the common path for the sheets and move it in the direction of the stop point (106), - as soon as the sheet of the preceding group has reached the stop point (106), move it to the collection station (108); and - retaining the other sheet at the point (106) of detention, so that the time lag is such that, shortly after the sheet of the preceding group has been issued to the collection station, the sheet of the subsequent group is introduced into the point (106) of detention.
