TECHNIQUE FOR MULTI-RATE CODING OF A SIGNAL CONTAINING INFORMATION

In a communications system, multi-rate coding inaccordance with the invention is implemented to generatemultiple representations of an audio signal at differentrates. These representations contain equivalent and/orvarious amounts of audio information. In an illustrativeembodiment, at least one of the representations is a corerepresentation containing core audio information. Theremaining representations are enhancement representationscontaining enhancement audio information. The corerepresentation is necessary for recovering the audio signalwith minimal acceptable quality. Such quality is enhancedwhen the core representation, together with one or more ofthe enhancement representations, is used to recover theaudio signal.
