A cosmetic composition (A) for permanent setting of keratin fibers (especially hair) comprises a cosmetic medium containing at least one thiyl radical precursor (I) comprising an S-halo, S-nitro or S-acyl-substituted organic thio compound. A cosmetic composition (A) for permanent setting of keratin fibers (especially hair) comprises a cosmetic medium containing at least one thiyl radical precursor of formula (I). R-(S-X)n (I). n : 1-5; R : linear, branched or cyclic, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbyl (optionally interrupted by one or more S, O, N, Si and/or P heteroatoms and optionally substituted by one or more of hydroxy, amino, carbamate, carbonate, hydrazine, ether, carboxylic acid, ester, amide, cyano and/or ureido groups); X : halo, nitroso (NO) (provided that (I) is other than S-nitroso-thioglycerol), -C(O)R'', -C(S)R'' or C(N)R''; and R'' : as for R. Independent claims are included for: (1) a method for permanent setting of keratin fibers, involving applying (A) to the fibers, leaving (A) in contact with the fibers at 20-100[deg]C (suitably ambient temperature), rinsing the fibers and fixing by contact with atmospheric oxygen or by application of a composition containing oxidant(s); and (2) a kit comprising a composition (I), a composition containing at least one metal salt and/or oxide (preferably cuprous, cupric or ferrous salt and/or oxide) and preferably also a composition containing metal chelating agent(s), stored in separate, oxygen-impermeable compartments.
