The system has a generator (120), a battery (150), a starter (110) and a capacitor (400) of high capacitance for storing electrical energy for the engine starting process. A voltage converter (310) and an interrupter (320) are connected in parallel between the capacitor and the battery and are controlled for starting the vehicle's engine so that the battery voltage is converted to a higher voltage and the electrical connection between the battery and the capacitor is interrupted. An independent claim is also included for a method of starting a motor vehicle engine.
