PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for detecting a discharge defective of a plasma display panel are provided to improve detection accuracy by comparing a measured current flowing on an electrode with a reference current. CONSTITUTION: A current detector(411) is connected to an Y-electrode to detect a current flowing on the Y electrode and convert a value of the detected current into a digital signal. A temperature detector(413) detects an environmental temperature of a panel to convert the detected environmental temperature into a digital signal. A discharge defective determining unit(412) determines a discharge defective based on the digital signals transmitted from the current detector and the temperature detector. The discharge defective determining unit compares a current value contained in the digital signal from the current detector with a reference current value in a normal discharge to determine the discharge defective.
