PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify a circuit by eliminating the need to drive a scan driver with a negative voltage. ;SOLUTION: In an address period, scan pulses having a 1st positive voltage Vy based upon a 2nd positive voltage (Vy-Vsc) are applied to respective 1st electrodes Xi and address pulses having a negative voltage -Vwa are applied to respective 3rd electrodes Aj of a selected image display cell to perform write discharging by line-sequential scanning. In a maintained discharge period, 2nd electrode maintaining discharge pulses having a positive voltage Vs are applied to a 2nd electrode Y as a common electrode and then 1st electrode maintaining discharge pulses having a positive voltage Vs are applied to respective 1st electrodes Xi to carry out display discharging for respective selected image display cells EU.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
