A lighting device having an electroluminescent device formed on an incident surface of a transparent substrate. The lighting device is characterized by a light emitting surface opposite to the incident surface being formed larger than said light emitting surface, and a light redirecting member disposed at least in a portion of said transparent substrate that is not associated with said electroluminescent device, wherein light which enters through said incident surface into said transparent substrate and proceeds toward a direction in which the light does not exit from said light emitting surface is redirected by said light redirecting member to exit from said light emitting surface.
