PURPOSE: A method for producing a brookite-type titanium dioxide(TiO2) powder in nano-scale, with uniform particle distribution is provided by using relatively low temperature and short period of processing time, thereby helping to broaden the range of applications of brookite-type TiO2. CONSTITUTION: The brookite TiO2 powder is produced by: (1) preparing an aqueous titanium solution comprising TiOCl2 and HCl by charging titanium chloride(TiCl4) with high-purity into a reactor, adding 0.01-12.0 M of a hydrochloric acid solution, and mixing them with stirring; (2) diluting the mixture to have 0.01-5.0 M of Ti4+ concentration, with 0.01-12.0 M of an hydrochloric acid solution or distilled water at room temperature, then stirring the diluted mixture; (3) reacting the solution from (2) at 15-200 deg.C for 2-24 hours to form precipitates of TiO2; (4) filtering the solution from (3), diluting the filtrates with distilled water, and adjusting pH to 6-8 with a strong alkaline solution; and (5) filtering the solution from (4), washing the filtrates 1-3 times with distilled water, and drying the washed solution to obtain brookite-type TiO2.
