An automobile has a fuel-injected diesel or petrol engine with an exhaust catalytic converter. The converter has a catalyst substrate with a nitric oxide storage catalytic converter. The substrate has a surface with nitric oxide storage catalytic converter exposed to exhaust gases. The substrate (10) forms a partition between the exhaust gases (12) and a reactor chamber (16) with a conversion reaction gas. The partition is gas permeable for the reaction gas towards the exhaust gas chamber (12). The porous ceramic catalyst substrate is permeable for carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen. The reaction chamber (16) has an inlet and an outlet (26) for the reaction gas.
