Fractions of the incident broad beam field (actually a bundle of beams) are re-combined by refraction in stages (3, 4, 5) along the z direction, into a narrower bundle. Exit bundles from each stage are parallel to one another. In each successive stage, the bundles are led together and recombined similarly, to leave as a parallel, more concentrated bundle of beams.
