Trialkylammonium by-products obtained in methylolalkane products from Cannizzaro or hydrogenation reactions are decomposed using a novel titanium dioxide-supported ruthenium-containing catalyst
Removal of trialkylammonium formates (TAAF) from methylolalkanes obtained by condensation of formaldehyde with higher aldehydes involves decomposing the TAAF at elevated temperature on a titanium dioxide- supported ruthenium-containing catalyst in presence of a hydrogen-containing gas. An independent claim is also included for such a catalyst in which commercially-available titanium dioxide is treated before or after shaping to form the support with 0.1-30 wt.% of an acid in which the TiO 2 is difficultly soluble.
