New solid phase catalysts (A) contain (a) palladium (Pd) and (b) one or more of antimony (Sb), bismuth (Bi), tin (Sn) and copper (Cu). An independent claim is included for the preparation of (A), by: (1) impregnating a solid carrier with a salt of Pd and salt(s) of the component(s) (b), sequentially or in single stage; and (2) calcining the (b)-impregnated catalyst (before or after impregnation with Pd) at elevated temperature in presence of oxygen.
