Ether is one of fundamental functionalities and typically prepared from the etherification of alkyl halides with alcohols, which requires a stoichiometric strong alkali for generating alkoxide nucleophiles. Recently, we have developed the palladium-catalyzed substitutions of benzylic carbonates with various nucleophiles, Some of the nucleophilic substitutions were conducted under neutral conditions. Based on the palladium catalysis, we developed a new access to benzyl phenyl ethers without use of strong alkali compounds.
