The stacks (2) are orientated in parallel rows and in at least one layer (7), on a flat support (8). In a first phase, groups of two rows are moved on the support in an axial direction to free a strip (63) of a certain width on the support. In a second phase, each stack located next to that strip is picked-up by a grab device (13), the free end of which is pressed onto that strip and then pushed under the stack. The extraction appliance has longitudinally moveable grab elements (12) with a grab device, which has a free end and actuator elements (15,16,17), to hold the grab device in contact with the surface strip and move them into a position aligned with each row. The appliance also has an advance group (19) with working head (27) on a carrier (20), and scanners (38) to determine the position of a layer in two directions.
