The device (1) has a hold-down device (2) for holding down a stack (S) on a support (U). A lifting device (3) lifts the stack in a side region (4.1). The lifting device comprises a prelifting arrangement (5) with a prelifter (6) for lifting an upper part of the stack in a lifting position. The prelifter is moved perpendicular or approximately perpendicular to the support in a lifting direction (h) under maintenance of a holding position for lateral force and/or form-fit contact at the side region of the stack laterally against the stack in the holding position. An independent claim is also included for a method for lifting a stack made of paper or cardboard blanks arranged on a support.
