A truck with an on-board diagnostic system linked to e.g. the exhaust system, has an external temperature sensor (11). The vehicle engine (14) has an exhaust gas turbocharger (12) with a compressed air cooler (13) linked to the sensor (11). In a process to monitor the correct operation of the sensor, the temperature sender (16) is used to verify its correct operation. In the process the charge air temperature T boostis measured and correlated with the ambient temperature T amb. An independent claim is also included for a control unit.
