The electrically controlled vehicle braking system (3,4) is controlled by a brake pedal, with a sensor (11) detecting the drivers action. A system is provided to bring the engine out of standby mode, and keep the vehicle stationary whilst also economizing energy used by the engine and the electrical braking system. The motor vehicle includes a drive system (6) and an electrically controlled braking system (3,4) acting on each of the wheels (2). This is controlled by a brake pedal operated by the driver, with a sensor (11) detecting the drivers action on the pedal. A system is provided to bring the engine out of standby mode, and a sensor (13) detects the speed of the vehicle. A further module (15) keeps the vehicle stationary, under electrical control. The control system is such that it can keep the vehicle stationary as soon as the detected speed of the vehicle is less than a predetermined limit and simultaneously the pedal action sensor (11) detects force on the brake pedal by the driver.
