Cosmetic or dermatological active agent combination for reinforcing skin barrier function, e.g. in combating dry skin, containing 6-hydroxy-sphingenin based ceramide precursor and 6-hydroxylase activator

New combinations (A) comprise (a) at least one precursor for 6-hydroxy-sphingenin based ceramide or 6-hydroxy-sphingenin based ceramide derivative, which is a substrate for 6-hydroxylase enzymes and (b) activator(s) for the 6-hydroxylase pathway. An independent claim is included for compositions comprising (A) in a physiologically acceptable medium. ACTIVITY : Dermatological. MECHANISM OF ACTION : 6-Hydroxylase pathway activator; stimulant of epidermal synthesis of ceramides based on 6-hydroxy-sphingenin. Addition of vitamin C at 50 Microg/ml to a culture medium for reconstructed epidermis increased the 6-hydroxy-sphingenin content after 6 days from ca. 1000 ng to ca. 5000 ng and reduced the sphingenin content after 6 days from ca. 14000 ng to ca. 4000 ng (all per mg of total lipids).
