The device has an elongated guide (10) defining an elongated cavity (28) that opens from one side towards a cover through a longitudinal slit. A lateral slide (12) is associated with an edge of the cover and has a guiding and driving unit (24) housed in the cavity. A chain placed in the cavity has driving units cooperating with driving units (30) of the unit (24). A pinion drives the cover inside the guide in a direction. An independent claim is also included for a cover of a swimming pool.
