PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal system that can detect unauthorized use of a portable terminal reliably and with less power consumption. PSOLUTION: The portable terminal system uses an authentication terminal having a short range wireless communication function and the portable terminal having a detection function of detecting an authentication terminal within a predetermined range. In a locked mode (unidentified state of an individual), the portable terminal, when a first start condition, such as a key input, is met, searches for a nearby authentication terminal for personal authentication and, if the personal authentication is successful, switches to a normal mode (identified state of the individual). In the normal mode, the portable terminal, when a second predetermined start condition, such as a key left unoperated for a predetermined time, is met, searches for the authentication terminal for personal identification and, if the personal identification is successful, retains the normal mode, or if not, switches to the locked mode.
