A method for providing news services through a television set that has a tuner, memory and a screen, a method comprising: - storing programming information and news information in memory; - show a part of the programming information on the screen, during an electronic programming guide mode; - display a plurality of menu buttons, including a news button during electronic program guide mode; - show a plurality of boxes listing news headlines, upon activation by the user of the news button, including the boxes a television icon, if there is a television program associated with the news headline listed; - adjust the tuner, so that it receives a channel that televises the program associated with a listed news headline, in response to a user order to connect to the channel, from the box that lists the news headline; - show the program in television mode; and - notify the viewer that a new news item has been downloaded into memory.
