a plant gene construct comprising a complete or partial sequence of DNA encoding a gene product athi (homeobox the Rabidopsis thaliana) under the control of a promoter functional in plants is presented. The promoter is preferably heterologous. Plant cells are transformed with the plant gene construct, and plants containing the cells have modified properties flowering. Also described is a method for modifying the flowering process in plants by transforming plants with a construct according to the invention.
