Isolated polynucleotides encoding polypeptides capable of binding LDL (low density lipoproteins) in native and methylated states, isolated polypeptides, called LBPs (LDL binding proteins) and fragments with biological activity and the like are described. Procedures are also described to determine if an animal is at risk of atherosclerosis, procedures for the evaluation of an agent for use in the treatment of atherosclerosis, procedures for the treatment of atherosclerosis and procedures for the treatment of cells that have an abnormality in its structure or in the metabolism of LBP. The composition of drugs and vaccines is also provided.
