A position sensing device (2) contains a magnetic field generating device (3)having at least one magnetic pole (4j) and a sensor device (5) with at leastone sensor(6) with an enhanced magnetoresistive effect. The magnetic field generatingdevice(3) should be arranged with respect to the sensor device (5) in such a waythat thesensor (6) is laterally offset with respect to the magnetic pole (4j), and acentralnormal (Z n) to the pole face (F l) of the magnetic pole is at leastapproximately in theplane (E l) of a measurement layer (9) of the sensor (6) or in a planeparallel to it. Inaddition, the magnetic field generating device (3) should be movable so thatthemagnetic field (h) of the magnetic pole (4j) is detected by the measurementlayer (9)of the sensor (6), and a run through all or part of the sensor characteristiccurve isinduced, with essentially only dependence on the direction of themagnetoresistiveeffect of the sensor being utilized.
