A lead accumulator thixotropic gel electrolyte is produced by acidifying the filling water to pH 2-4.7, prior to mixing with a gel-former. A thixotropic gel electrolyte for a lead accumulator is produced by storing the sulfuric acid, required for adjusting the final acid density of the electrolyte of the accumulator before use, in the form of lead sulfate in the active materials of the positive and negative plates, acidifying the cell filling water to pH 2-4.7 and then mixing the water with a gel-former.
