Quest for the optimum sampling point in a TDMA packet transmission system

The optimum sample from a number of input samples is determined by an iterative process based on calculating the mean amplitude of a reduced set of the input samples. This is preferably achieved by a determination of an approximate mean maximum amplitude sample and then selecting an additional sample, between the previous approximate maximum sample and the next such sample. A comparator compares the mean amplitude of this selected sample with the previous approximate maximum amplitude sample to determine a new approximate value. Independent claims are included for: (a) a receiver for data packets equipped with an oversampling device; (b) a packet transmission system; (c) and a method for determining the optimum sampling instant for input data.
