An external storage device includes a medium control unit (10), a monitoring unit (20), an interface unit (30), and a power control unit (40). The medium control unit (10) drives the recording medium and performs data access to the recording medium. The monitoring unit (20) monitors enabled/disabled state of the data access by the medium control unit (10). The interface unit (30) performs communication with a host device. When the data access is detected to be disabled by the monitoring device (20), the power control unit (40) limits power supply to the interface unit (30). When the data access is detected to be enabled, the power control unit (40) resumes power supply.
