Protecting contacting metal surfaces consists of coating at least one of them (26) with a self-lubricating compound (22) of graphite particles (12) in a nickel matrix (13). The compound is applied by plasma projection in powder form with granules between 20 and 100 mcm in size and containing 10 - 40 per cent by weight of graphite. Before applying the lubricant the surface(s) can be treated with a nickel-aluminium undercoat for adhesion, and the compound can be coated with a solid lubricant (24) such as molybdenum disulphide.
