A global gain value is generated to adjust the level of the input audio signal by comparing an average input audio signal level with predetermined input/output level curve. The audio volume of the input signal is adjusted by applying generated gain value to the signal level, and the dynamic range of the audio signal is adjusted accordingly. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) method of controlling audio volume; and (2) apparatus to control audio volume.
