A magnetic field modulator module (1, M1,M2,M3,M4) generates a temporally and spatially varying magnetic field. An XMR sensor module (4,5) detects the magnetic field variation and generates measurement signals based on them. An evaluation unit (6) receives the measurement signals from the XMR sensor module. Either the magnetic field modulator module or the XMR sensor module is attached to the object, while the other is spatially fixed. The evaluation unit determines the position of the object based on the measurement signals. An independent claim is included for a method of detecting the position of an object in space.
