The device has sensors attached at a front side of motor vehicles and connected with an electronic control device. The sensors are provided for distance measurement from front and exhibit radiation or detection characteristic. The control device has an evaluation module determining signals of the sensors and position of limitation points (A) of objects lying in a driving path direction (F) with respect to the front side of the motor vehicles. The limitation points of the objects are assigned during vehicle movement to lobes of the sensors. An independent claim is also included for a method for assisting a driver of a motor vehicle during a process of leaving a parking space for preventing collision with a forward object.
