In a papermaking process a web feed of wet paper (4) passes around a succession of rotating drums (1, 2, 3) together with a drying sieve (5). The exposed surface of the moving web drags a boundary layer of air towards a surface scraper-blade (10). The scraper blade is immediately preceded by an air spoiler (12) that is secured to the scraper but in close proximity to the exposed surface of the moving web. Together the scraper blade and air spoiler form a channel which removes most of the boundary layer from the moving web prior to contact with the scraper blade. The spoiler is made of e.g. stainless steel or plastic. The scraper blade and spoiler form a single unit that is presented at the same angle to the moving web.
