The device has an inhabitation area (10) with a base surface (11) for small mammals (1), and a stimulation device (20) with a distance over the base area, where the mammals are exposed to stimulation from the device (20). A detector device (30) optically detects position characteristics of the mammals. The detector device has an emitter-detector-frame (31) that surrounds the area (10) and detects the position and orientation of the mammals. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method of examining the behavior of a small mammal (2) a usage of a test cage or an examining device for a highly efficient screening of a number of mammals such as mice and rats.
